          He lived for several long stretches in America, married an American woman, and attempted in the early 1850s to set up a Norwegian-American utopian community in the mountains of Pennsylvania. He was a larger-than-life figure of the kind American audiences have always admired.

          Yet Bull's fame was by no means limited to the United States.
